INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Higemaru Makaijima: Nanatsu no Shima Daibouken' for the NES, released by Capcom in 1987. The game was also planned for the US market under the name 'Makai Island' but canceled before its release. Thanks to the guys at lostlevels.org, we can play a prototype version of it. There were also several requests for a walkthrough so this is contributing something back in return. Before this turns into a "shoutout" to my "homies" over at that site, let's get started with the actual guide... Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== Controls: ````````` For both ship and on foot, move with the directional pad. On the boat, use A to sail faster. It really helps to speed things up. While on foot, use A to jump and B to pick up objects, then press it again to release. For example, rolling a barrel or throwing a rock. Press SELECT to get the status screen. It will show the list of keys you have collected, your password to continue later, and the other inventory of things you have found so far. Once you have the map you can view it, as well as inventory item which will help you read the game's hieroglyphs. Display: ```````` There is not much to explain, as the only displays you get are the energy bar and sometimes the number of enemies you must defeat before moving on. This is only when on a ship. Energy: ``````` The top left corner always has your current energy. You need this to survive. Getting his means you will lose some of this energy, and when it's down to 0 then you die - game over. Don't worry as there are many items you can pick up to increase this and killing enemies will also result in energy. For most foes if you kill them in succession, this gained energy is doubled with each one. For example, if the first enemy gives you 10 energy, then the second would give you 20, then 40 and so on. =============================================================================== 03.) WALKTHROUGH G0300 =============================================================================== "Welcome to Adventure World" First, familiarize yourself with this world map: ______________________________________________________ |*START* ____ | | Curse __| |__ | | Ship | | Hebi | | > J.Knife | Ship | | |__ __| | | |____| | | | | Mermaid| | Ghost Ship _______ Ship| | _| | | | ________ | | | | | | | CUCK < | | | HEBI | | | | |________ |____ | | ____| | | |__ | | | | | | | | | |____| | | | | | Cuck | | MERMAID < _____ | | Dokuro Ship | | | | | | | Ship ________| |___________| | | | | | | | |CURSE| | | > OOKAMI | | Ookami Ship | | | | |___ | |_ _________ |__ __| |_ _| | | | v | ^ ^ | | | | _ | | | | |_| | | | DOKURO | _____J.Knife| | | | | | Ship | | | | | |______| | |___________|________________________|_________________| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CUCK SHIP G0310 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You start in the northwest of the map. Sail east all the way and then south. You will see the ship north of Okami island, bump into it to start the action sequence. You start with 1,000 health points (HP). The other number is the amount of pirates you need to kill before opening the path to the boss. Pick up barrels and roll them into the foes to knock them out. There are 5 pirates here and each is worth 10 HP. In the first screen, knock a barrel against the chest to find a heart worth 600 HP. If a pirate jumps into a barrel, it acts like armor. First hit him to get rid of the armor, then again to knock him out. On the second screen there are unlimited amounts of pirates. Kill anything in your way to move on. The third screen has another 5 pirates, you might want to get the requirement nearly down to 0 by now, but there is one more screen with unlimited pirates. While getting the rest of the pirates, slam a barrel against the chest for a POW, 2000 HP boost! Exit right to face the boss. BOSS The basic strategy is throwing bottles against him. If you hit a knife, it will get destroyed too. Time your throws to hit him instead. He starts with only two throws of two knifes each, but starts throwing more and more. Towards the end he will only stand at one spot and throw forever. If you run out of barrels you must leave and return, but of course the boss will refresh his health. When he dies, pick up the key. If you leave before he will respawn, so don't unless you want to re-fight this guy. Fortunately the entrance to the island is only slightly northwest of here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CUCK ISLAND G0315 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Use the rocks to defeat enemies in your way. Start by going south and then west when you can. Immediately go back north to find a chest with a POW. Return south and continue southwest past the four-way intersection with the tree. The path goes around west at the very bottom and then back north. If you continue north and climb up the temple, there will be a cryptic message. Before climbing the last steps there is also a branch going east, which ends up at some old guy who tells you about the secret. But instead, go left and south. The chest has a slice of melon to recover 200 HP. Walk right and throw all four rocks into the right tree at the top, from the south. It won't hit the tree, but instead the invisible spot in front of it. After the fourth throw, the pin wheel will show up. Take it for 10,000 HP. Continue south and go left to meet up with the chief. BOSS: Moribito He throws axes, and they are easier to avoid than the knifes. The axes also do not destroy your rocks. The only slightly annoying thing is that there aren't many rocks to throw, so if you are bad at aiming you may run out. He will die within 10 hits and the left opens up to continue. The old man here tells you about a book on "Death Island". Run back east and around the area where you got the wheel. Back at the beach, run all the way north and jump into the hole at the other end of the village. This returns you to the start of the island, so enter the gate to return to the ship. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CURSE SHIP G0320 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The ship is anchored at the west side of J-K island. The chest contains a pirate, it will increase the number of pirates in the first screen to 6. Only 9 more to go. The next screens are all identical to the first boat, only that the chest contains a pirate again. BOSS Same tactics apply, only he seems to have more HP this time around. Pick up the Curse key when he is defeated. Sail straight south and the island is just to the east. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CURSE ISLAND G0325 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The enemies can't touch you as you start off, which is nice. Make a path on the right side and there is another monolith that contains a message. Ignore it and walk through the doorway. Watch out for those thrown knifes. Continue north and then turn left immediately before the group damages you. Go up and turn right with the path. There is a POW with 2000 energy points. Take the upper path left and continue north. BOSS: Archbishop The mage warps from left to right and so on, he's quite easy. Throw the rocks while avoiding the fireballs, they hurt 500 each. You get 1000 back when he is dead. Return south and go left. Avoid the flames from the fire. Kill the puny weirdo and collect the POW for 2000, the guy is only 10 and doesn't actually hurt you in any way. Walk north, then left and pick up the chest for a melon (200). Go south to head back outside. To get a secret sword, make sure your health has three 0s at the end, for example, 3000 or 12000. Jump into the hole from the south to land in a room with the sword. Else you will return to the entrance. The extra hidden room also has a hole to return. Note: To get the health right, either fight more enemies or use the hex cheat as described in the FAQ. Make sure you switch off any cheat before collecting the sword as it adds 200 to your total. Jumping back in the hole will always return you back there if your health is a multiple of 1000, and if you do not get the 200 from the sword you either need to tweak his with another hex cheat or be stuck here forever... Before leaving, take the left path. Go into the cave. Try to ignore the warrior as much as possible. You need to throw all four rocks at the left half of the plate. It will open up. You could try killing the guy while doing that though, if he is really that annoying to you. Inside the room, pick up the Crystal. Collect all three of these for a better ending. Now you may leave the island all together. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MERMAID SHIP G0330 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The ship is in the northwest corner of Cuck Island. It's quite easy to spot once you made it to the entrance. You know the drill by now, the chest contains another pirate. The ship is slightly longer than the previous ones, but the same tactics apply to get your kill count up. The second chest has another pirate. Same deal for the boss, but this time there are no wheel for the guy to hide behind. It makes little different, however, so get going. To find the island, sail all the way back west and then slightly south. The entrance is on the east side of this island. Note: This island is incorrectly called "Marmaid Island" in the game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MERMAID ISLAND G0335 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quickly dash south and then east. Falling into the water will cost you 3000 health, something you better avoid. The old man in this screen will tell you exactly the same thing, in not so many words. Go left one more screen and the turn south. Ignore the fish and also try to avoid the kraken in the next screen. Ignore yet another weird monster down south and go left. Jump over the floating platforms and get the 200 energy from the chests. Continue left to the corner of this island. The chest has another 200 energy but the only cannonball is guarded by two pirates. It might cost you more to get rid of them and open the chest, so decide if it's worth getting. Go north and when there is a fence in the path, take the right side north. Defeat the pirates and get the chest, then go south on the left side and grab the chest while the snake-thing isn't there. You only get damaged by its head anyway. Take the left path from here, and continue through the pirate-infested areas until the northern dead-end. When the coast is clear, literally, remove all the rocks from the second row from the left. The top rock will reveal a mermaid. Walk her over to the small bridge and free her, be careful not to fall in though. Collect the 2nd crystal that appears. Backtrack to the point where there was a bridge with floating tile going west and one bridge going north with a fish on it. This time we will go north. BOSS: Dual Tentacles There are two tentacles here, and one will definitely hit you if you try to run straight north to safety. Instead, wait a split second and dash through its line (remember only the head hurts you), once you are at the top of this land they cannot reach you. This is like a mini-boss, you must defeat the heads several times. Each takes two rocks to defeat but it grows back almost instantly after it is gone. Once they are gone for good, you not only get 1500 energy but the path to the north is restored. Defeat the pirates in the north and go up on the left side. Collect this tablet. Backtrack once again, but this time even further to where you found the two chests next to the cannonball. Go right along the bridge and the screen to the north. In the small area with lots of water, grab the POW from the chest for 2000 energy. Be careful of the nearby kraken. The same goes for the next areas as you continue north. The bridge will extend so you can cross. In the last screen to the north you will find another old man next to a statue. There is nothing to do here, but he gives a vital clue. Return to the previous screen and defeat all the pirates. There is a 4x4 grid of rocks. The rock at location 2 and 3, counting from the top and left, reveals a hole. It returns you back to the gate of the island. Enter your ship to move on. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HEBI SHIP G0340 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sail north and you will find an island. The ship is on the east side of here, a little off the coast. The ship itself is nothing special as the ones you have encountered up until now. The boss is exactly the same as the Mermaid ship one. Hebi island is just south of here, but you need to travel all the way down to the south end for the entrance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HEBI ISLAND G0345 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walk right and for a Capcom reference, talk to the guard. Inside you will face zombies, they aren't very hard to kill. Walk left make your way through the rocks to the left side of the room. The middle rock will uncover stairs leading down. Go around the right side until you get to an old man. Ignore his words, but do take the flask. Return to where you landed and go north to take the stairs up to the previous floor. Quickly dash right to avoid the zombies. Go up the stairs and go north in this area via the second left or second right corridor. Follow the rooms, there isn't much you can do wrong. When you arrive up the stairs and see two chests above, go around the northern room and use the two rocks to get the precious energy. Continue right in the screen above. The maze here is nothing special, and the doors closing behind you also have no meaning. Continue through the corridors and take the stairs up. Quickly run left and kill the two flying enemies. Grab the flask and go up the stairs. Follow the screens to the next stairs and then a few more until you meet the boss. BOSS: Cyclops The first thing you need to do is get through to him. His fireballs will hit you through the rocks and 100 each is not too light if there are multiple hits. What is worse, he likes to wait in the only path through to hi, and a melee attack hits for 1000 energy! Once you have managed to get into a more open area, avoiding his attacks is much easier and there are plenty of rocks to throw at him. A kill is worth 2000 energy plus a warning. Go north and pick up the tablet. Return a few screens to where the three annoying flying enemies are, then jump into the hole to return to the island gate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DOKURO SHIP G0350 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sail west a bit and then start going north as soon as the island ends. You will find the ship just shortly. This time you need to defeat 30 pirates before the passage to the boss opens. It shouldn't be much different to previous encounters. The boss has a slightly different area, there are more barrels in rooms rather than in the open. When you have the key, before heading to the island sail back to Cuck Island and make your way to the area after the boss. Read the previous section of how to get there, just don't take the tour north to the temple this time. It's quite easy to find your way, just make your way west to the sandy area and then south. Talk to the old man who says to go ahead to "Death Island". Hop back into the ship and now go to Dokuro Island on the west side of the map. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DOKURO ISLAND G0355 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quickly slay the skeleton snakes and move south. Continue south but watch out for the flying skulls. When you have another choice of going south or east, still take the southern path. Near the end of the screen you will encounter the first tree-eye. Watch out for those. A couple of screens later you can find a chest with some energy. Take the western path and then south one more screen. Pick up a skull and make the eye-tree move on the left. When it is dead you can go north on the left side. Follow the path to find another chest before ascending the stairs. If you go north first, there is a chest with 200 energy guarded by some snakes and a skull. Up to you if you want to there, it's not that much of a trip. Return to the bridges if you decide to go. Go west across the long bridge, kill the skull and then go south and take the long stairs down. At the end you can get the chest you saw earlier for a nice 2000 POW boost. Return up the stairs and this time go west. Go around the trees to the north. BOSS: Zombie Giant The physics are all screwed up here. The fireballs he throws are first small but soon become very large and take off 100 each. The skulls you can throw will roll very slowly, and you must watch his movements to get the timing of the throw right. After a few hits he is already dead and you get 2000 energy back for your troubles. Walk north and pick up the chart from the fenced in area. In your inventory, look at it to find it will tell you about the alphabet the monoliths have been showing you strange messages in. You could now go back to read them. Run back south and east to the long bridge. Go north instead. Cross the short bridge and go north, up the stairs. Nice heartbeat. Walk east once more and fall in the gap that is supposed to be covered by the top right of the four skulls here. It will return you to the entrance gate so you can leave. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OOKAMI SHIP G0345 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The next ship is just southeast of your position and the previous gate port. As for the ship itself, I don't feel I still need to guide you through this from now on. There are 30 crew mates you need to dispatch before tackling the boss. I found that on the second screen, at least two shipmates will usually get stuck somewhere and you can simply kill the one that is respawning regularly. To get to the island, simply sail west and you will find it easily. It covers the entire southeast corner of the map, but you must find the entrance at the northwestern tip. Note: Ookami (Okami) means wolf in Japanese, as you might know from the PS2 game of the same name. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OOKAMI ISLAND G0345 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These advanced pirates throw barrels and rocks at you, quite efficiently. They are also worth 50 energy points per kill so you can make up for the slightly higher difficulty level. Getting a chain will return a couple of hundred. Start by going right past the T-junction. Pass another screen with two ships and on the next screen there are two more ships. After dispatching the pirates, and it is quite easy to rack of energy chains by going back and forth these screens, throw 10 barrels into the left ship's bow. Nothing will happen for now, but you will know if it worked soon enough. Continue right past the two cannons and go south, then right and back north. Kill the pirate(s) and grab the POW from the chest. Return to the T-Junction and go south until you see a bridge that is now extended. If it is not, you did not throw the barrels correctly, or not 10 of them, or the wrong ship. On the other side is a monument. Throw 4 rocks into the front and the screen will shake. Continue south on the narrow corridor and turn west when you get the choice. There will be a few more ships and then you get outside into the desert. Kill the two pirates and remove the boulders south of the large cactus. Throw some more rocks into it from the south to get the (O) crystal and 10,000 energy! Go directly west from here. BOSS: Fire Kong The gorilla throws fireballs in quick succession, you have to be quick and I advise you also take him out quick rather than attempt to dodge his attacks. It only requires a few shots anyhow. At the northern screen you will find a map, viewable in the inventory screen. You might notice the northern island is much longer now, this is because of the earthquake you created just a moment ago. Go south and past the old man (slightly southeast). There is a strange-looking collection of rocks, in two rows. Remove the left one and the last boulder is blocking a hole. Jump inside to return to the gate leave this island for now. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- J.KNIFE SHIP G0355 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The ship is located just south, inside Ookami island's shape. If follows the same strategy as that island's guarding ship as well. When you've got the last key, it's time to hunt down the last ship of the game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GHOST SHIP G035X ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The ghost ship is easy to spot, it's small and gray as well as sailing around in the area marked on the map. Ram it to get on-board. There is no requirement to defeat the pirates, so quickly make it to the boss and finally get the last of these guys. Pick up the third tablet. The final new island is just north of the location you encountered the Ghost Ship. If you sail right there will be the newly formed land in a slightly yellow color. The entrance however, is still at the west side. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- J.KNIFE ISLAND G0355 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take the eastern route and follow it to the frozen lake. On this you dash faster, but it's also easier to get touched by the enemies. Follow the lake north and then east. Cross the river that is coming from the north, then when you reach the northeast corner you will see an igloo. Walk north from here and maneuver around the craters. Continue north. MINI-BOSS: Ice Block This huge ice block spews ice cubes that fly towards you. They are fast, but aren't too well aimed at you. Throw some rocks at the mouth when it is open. If it isn't open the boss won't flash and it didn't get hurt. After eight hits it will freeze and open up the passage on the right. Don't take this up unless you want to talk to the delusional old geezer, but go back south and turn right. Go around the small lake and take the eastern path south. Go east once more to reach the shore. Continue south until you reach a path with many craters. Jump over them and avoid/kill the pirates. The next screen has chests, open them up. Return to the previous floor and enter the igloo. As you go along the screens, watch out for the statues that periodically throw fireballs. At the end you have a room with many rocks. Remove the ones in the bottom left corner to find a hole. Drop in and stand in front of the large door. Looks like we only came here to find out we need to get something else first. It also appear that we must do this to progress the game, and now backtrack all the way to the gate. So go back through this small dungeon and return west to your ship. Sail back to Ookami Island. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OOKAMI ISLAND (2) G0380 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back here, walk right until the T-Junction and go south all the way. Turn right and stay near the south until you find a narrow path leading outside into the desert. Follow the outer walls of the fortress east and then go up the stairs you find here. The doors are now open here, they weren't before you arrived at the J.Knife dungeon door. Go through to meet another boss. BOSS: Bouso The pirate king has a strong hook attack. It lunges forward very far and hits you for 2,000 each time. He moves around quite a bit and has large hit points. The good news is that, he is still very easy and possibly easier than most other bosses you have encountered. You need to hit him with most of the barrels. Miss a lot and you will probably not rattle down his entire health and leave for a restart. His attack is easy to dodge, just don't stand directly underneath him. He cannot even attack to the sides, so grab a barrel and walk towards the same level he is on to get an easy hit. You could also try to stand next to where he will aim his hook at and simply let go on his right side. When he is dead, pick up the tear. Time to return to J.Knife island. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- J.KNIFE ISLAND (2) G0390 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is nothing new to do here but return to the dungeon at the east side of the island. Drop down into the igloo and run across the statue-filled rooms. Uncover the hole once again and drop into the hole. FINAL BOSS: Devil the Redarmer The devil, as you might have expected from the prophecies told my some of the old men around the island. He flies around very fast targets fireballs with somewhat good accuracy. Of course if you picked up the sword early on Curse Island, he will not even get the chance to get going. Jump into the hole when he is dead. THE END =============================================================================== 04.) FAQ G0500 =============================================================================== 1.) What are these green ships? They are merchants or something of that sort, but for your purpose they will give you hints. Seek them out if you need some clues. There are three hints in total they can give you. The boat tends to be around the start area in the northwest. 2.) What are the keys for? They open up gates on the islands, else you cannot enter them. 3.) One island is sealed, what can I do? Read the walkthrough, it's described there. 4.) I found these blue circles / spheres / crystals. They give you different endings, depending on how many you collect. More on this soon as I can confirm it. 5.) How about these stone plates? You need these at the end or you cannot progress. 6.) Is there a secret message? Maybe. There is a rumour of an extra ending screen when you finish with a certain number of health. The designers birthday is March 24, but finishing with 324, 3240 and 32400 without anything special happening. Skrybe, a staff member at LostLevels.org, mentioned there is a message encoded into the ROM. Similar to the game Commando for the NES, the message goes like this: WHAT DAY IS IT? IT'S MAR 24TH. IT'S THIS GAME PROGRAMERS BIRTHDAY. It appears wheresas this message is inside the game, it was not used at the end of the game. Perhaps it is activated at another portion of the game, however. Go ahead and test some more theories ;) 7.) Can I tackle any pirate ship when I want to? Theoratically. I have never tried it myself and it is possible that the captain will not drop a key if you haven't gotten the one before. In that case it would be similar to those pirate ships sailing around that can still be attacked for nothing but fun. Only the moored ships are important for progress. 8.) What's the deal with these old guys hanging around on the island? They are wise men and should give you tips, similar to the merchant ships. However, their meanings are usually hard to understand. You can solve the game without talking to most of them. 9.) I cannot read the inscriptions on the monoliths. You will find a decypher code later which can be used to read the message. They are only hints on your progress and can be skipped if you know what to do. 10.) What are these missile-like things lying around in the field? They are mines, you can shoot them to get rid of all enemies in the screen in one go. Useful indeed. 11.) Are there any cheats to help me with this game? Sure, hex cheats though. Set addresses 0481, 0482, 0483 and 0484 to value 1-9 for the desired amount. For example, setting all the values to 1,2,3,4 would result in a health level of 12340. For completion sake, address 0495 changes the single digit, but as the game itself never changes this from 0 there is not much good this will do. =============================================================================== YY.) VERSION HISTORY GZZ00 =============================================================================== v0.99 is a rough guide to give the first English walkthrough for players that have a hard time getting around not knowing what to do and what to do next. This seems to be the biggest downside of the game. I plan on improving this guide in the near future. v0.99b has some more info on the endings, and it pretty much complete. All I'm waiting for in some confirmation on the blue spheres and how to alter the ending if anything. (28th of July 2007) v1.0 The game does feature different endings depending on your crystals. Thanks to AdamL for figuring it out and also correct a small mistake in the walkthrough. =============================================================================== ZZ.)
