Each level has eight sections. Each section has a distinctly different flavor, but in each one you must find six of a certain item and leave. There are sometimes side-sections where you need to pick up a special item and then get out, as otherwise you cannot go to the right edge and leave the scene. The items are as follows: level 1: cheese(for the party) level 2: ring(for the wedding) level 3: christmas tree(for the christmas party) level 4: baseball(present for Mappy Jr's birthday) On level 2, the meowkies, who chase Mappy and of which there are five, become as fast as he is, and on level three they are faster. Suggesting that Mappy knocked Mapico up at the Christmas party(thus giving the story compactness and closure) in round 3 is cruel. Perish the thought! GENERAL STRATEGY AND USE OF CONTROLS --trampoline turns blue, then yellow, then red, and then it breaks. --distractors often appear after you've picked up cheese. --note that the kitties usually get you if you are leaving just as they land on a platform. This is the opposite of what happens in Mappy. --note that if you push down while you jump on a trampoline, Mappy will bounce back down. This can be a useful way to throw the kitties off track. --similarly you can also bounce off a wall on the later levels, and that will push Mappy back down. --Generally, a good start to any platformed scene(i.e. not 4 or 6) is to stay low and go right until you can't. On the very last ones this is trouble. --Making Mappy jump will slow him down, so it's bad if you're trying to run away. However, when you have a kitty jumping at you, you may be able to jump over it regardless of its speed. --When you place a golf-club distractor to avoid kitties coming from both ways, you can move back and forth around it and can probably escape. --If you wait too long to finish the levels, the kitties get faster. --Watch about falling onto a ladder(you can climb off the top) and about jumping up onto one. This isn't an issue in the early stages but it there's a ladder above the trampoline you, and the kitties, will get on it if you do nothing with the controls. --Jumping can confuse the kitties as to where you are. If you jump while a kitty is bouncing, it may not detect which platform you are on. --You're faster than the cats until 1-8. Then you are as fast. On 3-8 they finally get faster than you, and they seem to pick it up another notch at 4-7. --In the arcade game, you had a brief grace period where if you walked by the kitties just as they bounced on the trampoline, you were safe. Not here. --However, the strategy of quickly bouncing on and off a platform when the trampoline below turns red is still effective. --Another thing to watch is, on the vines(scene 4,) you will not want to hold a directional arrow too long. It will often cause you to fall off. --There are four things you should know about ladders: first, that you can hold down a diagonal direction if you see a ladder ahead you want to climb. Second, if a kitty is just behind you, they will touch and kill you as you climb down the ladder. Third, you are always faster on ladders than kitties in any level. Finally, kitties are stunned if they fall down onto up-ladders broken in half. --Kitties seem to start in the top center, but they are regenerated off to the sides. Usually the one you can't see. LIST OF DISTRACTORS --FISH bounce in the direction you're facing. Kitties dance after them but Goro is unaffected. --GOLF CLUBS cause kitties to bounce back and forth for a while. However, if placed near the edge, it will cause the kitties to fall off and will lose its effect. --BOXING GLOVES knock kitties out for a bit and stay around a while. --CIRCLE WITH LINES(supposed to be a gold coin according to the manual...huh?) causes Goro to dance for a bit. POINTS --10 points for jumping on a trampoline --50 points for picking up a distractor --100 points for picking up a treasure --1000 for a treasure in the side room(i.e. cross in the church.) --When you use a weapon(i.e. cheese cannon,) you get 1000 for the first cat you take out, incrementing to a maximum of 4000 by thousands. Goro is worth 5000 points. --picking up the right treasure at first gets you x5 points for all the others until you complete the screen or die. Nothing else gets that multiple. --extra Mappy at 40000. SCENE-SPECIFIC SCENE 6: --100 points for blasting a ghost-kitty with your gun --500 for blasting Goro(mummy) with your gun --taking the sun gets you points for all baddies on the screen SCENE DESCRIPTIONS AND SPECIALTIES GENERAL Trampolines are regenerated when you die. Kitties start in the top middle of the platform levels. LEVEL X-1 The side level is a car in the train, and you need to get a ticket in order to pass the conductor, who looks a lot like Goro. The background features a train with several cars. Goro is wearing an engineer's uniform. The special gadget to nail monsters is at one edge of a platform. You jump up to grab it, and it transports you horizontally until it can't move. Then it disappears. If you jump around the engine, a puff of smoke will appear that takes the monsters in its way out. Move right with it to extend its effect. LEVEL X-2 The side level is a bar(shouldn't it be a saloon?) You need to get a scroll(huh?) in order to pass. The background is a western town. Goro has a bright red, tan and lime green cowboy get-up on. The special gadget to nail monsters is a punching bag. It swings back and forth for a bit after you pass. There is also a cheese cannon you can use once. It is not reloadable on death. Running to the right as you fire it will help it last a little longer. LEVEL X-3 The background is a tribal village. Goro is dressed like a chieftain. The side level is a hut you jump into from the second level. The item in there is a flower/vine that allows you to walk over the gorge. The special gadget to nail monsters is a bomb. Jump for it, and it falls to the ground and is not activated until a kitty touches it. It's fun to watch the kitties explode. They also take out any kitties above or close to them and stay around for a while--walking over them does not harm you. LEVEL X-4 The side level is a cave two-thirds of the way through, which is entirely dark unless you got the torch on the previous level. The item you need from it is a vine, to repair the bridge which you need to cross to finish the level. Goro is wearing a hula skirt in this level, sort of a native dress. There are no Meowkies on this level but parrots instead. The special gadget to nail the monsters is a bunch of grapes located near the vines where Goro is. At first you can nail Goro but after that you'll have to settle for the parrots. Parrots always move to the left, but you may want to watch out for them moving diagonally. LEVEL X-5 The background is a dock. A ship is docked in the background, with a store to the right. Goro is dressed like a sailor. The side level is a supplies store in the bottom right. You need to pick up a pliers, which allows you to cut the gate that bars you from the next level. The special gadget to nail monsters is a hand-hold from the ceiling that Mappy flips around. Note that the kitties can't accurately see where Mappy is. If there is a ladder to the left or right, they'll stay at Mappy's perceived height. You're at the mercy of the timer as you use this one. A kitty can approach you just as you stop spinning, in which case you're toast. LEVEL X-6 The background is a dark night. There is a church, along with a bunch of ruined buildings, in the background. On 1-6 and 4-6, the side level is a church. You need to get a cross in order to dispell the Goro/vampire. On 2-6 and 3-6, the side level is the run-down house. You need to exit through the correct door to advance to 2-7 or 3-7. LEVEL X-7 The background is, according to the manual, Seventh Street. It is a lot like X-2 only a bit more modern. The side level is a sort of general store. It's in the bottom right. You need to get a trumpet in order to bring the drawbridge at the right edge down. The special gadget to nail monsters is infuriatingly useless. It's a valve you jump at, and it knocks the monster above out. While it never runs out of uses, you'll have few chances to do so. LEVEL X-8 There is never a special item in level X-8 as it goes directly to level X-bonus, a sort of side level. The exit is in the center after you've gotten all the treasures. The special gadget to nail monsters is a bowling ball that is a bit slower than you are. Follow it a bit to get its maximum range. LEVEL X-bonus You don't get any points until you solve this level. On the bright side, you can't lose a guy even if you break through a trampoline. Basically it's a timed level; you need to find a good path(although you have a nice chunk of leeway) to collect six of the treasures and make it over to the mouse on the other side. Most of the time it's Mapico. The pictures of Mappy smirking after his success are a riot. These may take some time to figure out, but the key is to spend as little time as possible jumping on the trampolines. LEDGER OF MAPS H = ladder ~ = trampoline | = wall + = item(cheese, ring, tree, baseball) - = floor ' = "nailer" that can take kitties out one time n = ladder without a top ^ = ladder without a bottom * = x5 treasure(if collected first) = special treasure in side level as well These maps are not 100% perfect. They are generally correct with respect to relative horizontal distance(vertical distance is pretty straightforward--each platform is the same distance above the one below,) but to make it perfect would require more than 80 characters per line, which is not a good format, really. For instance, the ladder on the left of level 1-1 is actually in the exact middle of the platform, but that Also, at the right edge, I never show the simple walk to the next level. I only show if a wall is there(level X-8, castle.) For the walkthrough, you may not be able to do everything immediately. There are many techniques to shake the kitties that you should be acquainted with, however. DETAILS ON EACH LEVEL BELOW I won't mention "obvious" stuff like, if you run by a piece of cheese, jump at it. Assume you should take it if you pass by unless you are trying for the x5 bonus. LEVEL 1-1 This one is really pretty easy, as you'd expect for a first level. There are no barriers or anything like that. Platforms appear regularly, and you have a bit of a chance to play with the stairs. There's no separate room, either. I find you can just go from left to right collecting everything. + + ------ ------- ------ ------- ------ ' + + H ------ ------- ------ ------- ------ H ' * H + ' ------ ------- ------ ------- ------ ' ~~------~~-------~~------~~-------~~------~~ LEVEL 1-2 In general, for the X-2 levels, you should make sure you use the cheese cannon as soon as possible so you can clear out the bad guys and pick up any tough treasure. This level is also straightforward although you may have a bit of a run to get the bottom cheese. This is an especially good level to try for the x5. * + ----- ------- ------ ----- --- --- > H + ' ----- ------- ------ ----- ---~~--- + ' H + ----- ------- ------~~----- -------- ' H H + ' ----- ------- -------------~~-------- LEVEL 1-3 This is another good level for Mappy. You'll have a lot of fun leaving bombs for the baddies, and there should be no problem getting the x5(center right) as well as the other cheeses. However, you can make it even easier on yourself by going directly right until the third trampoline; the kitty that looks like it will come after you will not. By that time the kitties will be out in left field. -----------~~------- ----------- ------ H H ' H + ----------- ------- -----------~~------ ' + * H ----------- ------- ------- ---------- +H ' ' + ~~-----------~~-------~~-------~~---------- LEVEL 1-4 There's a lot of bouncing around to learn here. The main part is not to get flummoxed by the controls. Pushing right when the platform is moving left may cause you to fall. The water is lethal, as are Goro and the parrots. Falling off the vines onto the platform is also lethal; however, falling from moving platforms to the ground is safe. To get past the first moving platform you'll probably want to push right when you're at the right edge of movement--you can then grab the vine. You'll need to time your drops off the vines and to remember that you move in the same direction the platform does. The top cheese after the first vines is the one that gives you x5, only it isn't really practical, as you have to go back and forth. Be sure to go to the top of the vine where Goro is. You'll get 5000 for knocking him out. Also you can stock up on fish here by waiting at the bottom of a vine. They aren't as good as golf clubs, but they can still distract kitties. No standard maps for level 1-4. LEVEL 1-5 Since the x5 is so easy to get, why not get it? You can lie low going all the way to the right although you may want to pick up the cheese on the second platform first. This is a relatively easy and rewarding level; if kitties are on your tail just grab a handhold, flip around, and pile up points. + + --------- ---------- ----------------- ' + H ' ---------~~---------- --------- ------ H +H ' + ----------- -------- --------- ------ * H ~~-----------~~--------~~---------~~------ LEVEL 1-6 It's not hard to master the shooting game, although you have to remember that shots don't last too long. You just need to worry about the keys, which stand out well against the dark sky. If you can find the sun(yellow circle) that will buy you some extra time and points. Once you've gotten all six keys, go to the church. It's not too hard to get by. You should be able to walk across the top to the right, bounce off the trampoline below the hole, walk right some more, bounce, and move over to the right. You must get the cross by bouncing on the rightmost trampoline. Once you do, you will be able to leave, and you will be able to pass to the right of the Goro/vampire on the main screen, leading you to the next scene. Remember that your gun only lasts for a little while and then needs to be recharged. Don't worry if they touch your balloon, and watch out if you get too close to the ground. In general you just want to get the keys and get out. Look for the yellow sun, as taking it will dispell all monsters until the sun rises all the way up again. The sun to make the monsters disappear is in clear view. The x5 key is the one to the right of the sun. The side screen is in the church. You'll need to pick up the cross. -------+ -------------- | ----- +~~----- ------+ H| $ ----- +------- ------+ ~~-----~~+-------~~-------~~ LEVEL 1-7 The x5 cheese is beyond another one, so you may want to backtrack a bit as it's the only way you'll get any real points here. This level is still easy enough that you can do so. That two platforms have no cheese helps to make this level particularly simple. You should know where to go, and since you can outrun the kitties or outsmart them on the trampoline, the execution shouldn't be hard. + + + -------- ----------- ---- ---------- ' H --------~~----------- ----~~---------- '' H -------- ----------- ---------- ---- + * H + '' ~~--------~~-----------~~----------~~----~~ LEVEL 1-8 The wall on the right side is a new wrinkle. So is the cats' newfound speed. Still this isn't too tough of a level. You just need to know to exit at the center. Again, it's pretty easy to move right to get the first three and left to get the top three. However, since you exit in the center, you may wish to skip the first cheese(i.e. skip skipping for it) and circle around to pick it up last. + + + | ---------- ------- ------- ---- -------| H ' H| ---------- ------- ------- ---- -------| ' H ' * | ---------- ------- ------- ----~~----- | H + + | ~~----------~~-------~~-------~~-----------~~| LEVEL 1 BONUS Go all the way right. Then, bounce on the trampoline and go left to the third platform. Going to the left, bounce to the left on the first trampoline, staying on the third, then bounce up to the left of the fourth on the next trampoline. Get the cheese and retrace your steps. Bounce right to the third platform, then bounce right to the top platform at the next trampoline. Then take the long bounce up and down to get to Mapico, who will be happy you remembered her birthday. Success: Here is a gift to celebrate your birthday. Thanks Mappy! Failure: You are late for my birthday. No bonus. + -------- ------- ----- -- + + --------~~-------~~----- ------ ------- ------- + + + ~~------~~-------~~-------~~ LEVEL 2-1 Here you are introduced to walls in the middle of a level. Fortunately the only one here has a pulley that will help you escape. Nevertheless this level requires a bit more care than the first. To get through quickly go all the way to the right(jumping on the second-last trampoline) and bounce to get the upper right ring. Then sweep back and go back right below. Naturally there will be some distractions but you should be able to fake the monsters out on the trampoline. H + + --------- ---------------- ----------- + ' * H '| H ' ---------~~-------- ------~~----------- ' + H --------- -------- -------- --------- H + ~~---------~~--------~~--------~~---------~~ LEVEL 2-2 The x5 bonus is rather nasty to get here as you walk into almost a dead end doing so--even if you make it, you've got a long way either way down the ladder to a trampoline. You might need to use a distractor. However, walking along the top to get the other three isn't so bad, and if you want to use a little finesse, just ignore the ring to the right when you start and circle around to get all the rings--see 1-8 for another illustration of this. + + + -------------- -------- -------------- C H ' ' H -------------- -------- ------~~------ ' H * | + ----- ------- --------~~------ ------ + H H ' ~~-----~~-------~~----------------~~------~~ LEVEL 2-3 ****THE MAIN SCREEN**** With the bombs you should again be able to clear this up pretty easily. Getting the x5 should be trivial as the kitties will come over to the left and you can go under them. Then you'll probably want to sneak over and get the upper left ring(maybe break through the trampoline to the right and pull the kitties to the bottom) and the rest shouln't be terribly hard. + + --------- -------- ----------- ------ |* ' ' + ---------~~--------~~-----------~~------ H H H ------- ---------- --------- -------- + H +H | ' ~~-------~~----------~~---------~~--------~~ ****INSIDE THE HUT**** Oh look, your first platform level with a side mission. If you immediately go hard right you should make it. A kitty will bounce on the trampoline to the right, but it won't run at you for some reason. Cool...just jump up to get the torch, and get out. ----------- ----------- H ----------- ----- ---- + H | * | ----------- -----~~---- + ~~-----------~~-----------~~ LEVEL 2-4 There is no map for this screen. Basically it is the same as 1-4, except there are a few more mobile platforms. Nasty fish also come out of the water instead of distractor fish, so hanging around in that area can be fatal. The ring to the left of Goro is the one that will get you x5. Again, it's quite a job to get that one and go back, so don't bother with it. Again remember to knock Goro out with the grapes. LEVEL 2-5 Again with the handholds you can spin on, this is not a bad scene at all. Again you can pick off the bottom three, then the top three. The x5 is very easy to pick up. + --------- ---------- ------ -------- + | H + ' ---------~~----------~~------~~-------- H H + | H --------- ---------- -------- ------ * H | +H ' ~~---------~~----------~~--------~~------~~ LEVEL 2-6 Little different from 1-6 until you get inside. It's not the church but the old house you need to go to. The x5 key is to the upper right of the sun. Recognize the background tune? The background? It's the original Mappy--sort of! You just need to find the right door to enter, and you'll be okay. Teleporting between five of the doors will run you in circles, but the sixth lets you escape. The diagram below shows the pattern, 1->2->3->4->5. Door 6 is how you get out. You don't need to pick up any items, but be sure to avoid Goro the vampire, who will cost you a life. Cycling through the doors and eventually bouncing right from door # 2 when you can should work. Of course door # 5 is good as well, but you may be best off dragging kitties to door #1, waiting, entering and going right from door # 2. A quick move back and forth will always send you through the door you just entered. ****INSIDE THE HAUNTED HOUSE**** D D ------- -------- ------- G D ~~------- --------~~------- D D -------~~-------- ------- D ~~-------~~--------~~-------~~ WHICH DOORS GO WHERE: 6 2 5 1 4 3 LEVEL 2-7 ****THE MAIN SCREEN**** Another good level to get the x5 on. Kitties start on top so they're shielded from you. Again you can circle around across the top, although you may want to use the stairs in the center to make the two center rings easier to get. + + --------------- ---------- ----------- H + | + ' -------- -----~~----------~~----------- H H H -------- ------- -------- ----------- '' * ' + '' ~~--------~~-------~~--------~~-----------~~ ****SIDE SCREEN**** You'll have to jump off the middle trampoline to the left to pick up the trumpet. The level starts here if you completed 2-6. Otherwise, you need to pick up all the rings before entering the store(far left) and going here. It's actually very easy if you go directly for the trumpet. ------------------------ H H ---------- ------------ H | H -------- * ------------ H| ~~----------~~------------~~ LEVEL 2-8 The x5 ring is rather hard to get and may cost you a life or a weapon; however, if you can distract all the kitties over to the left you can bypass one ring temporarily and pull it off. The stairs on the far right are huge for getting away from kitties. You'll need to do quite a bit of looping to pick up everything, and I recommend breaking the top center trampoline. + * + | -------- -------------------- ----------| ' H| --------~~---------~~---------~~----------| + | |' + H | ---------- ------- ------- ------------| ' + H H H ~~----------~~-------~~-------~~------------| LEVEL 2 BONUS First, bounce right to the second level. Then break the trampoline to the right by going down while bouncing--this saves a lot of time. Then go all the way right, bounce up to the second platform, go left, climb the ladder. You must be a bit to the left to get the ring with a standing jump, so just do a running-jump to the left. Bounce to the top left for the remaining cheese, then go back to the trampoline and bounce to the top right to get close to Mapico. Success: Wedding bells ring for Mappy and Mapico! (Mappy in white tux with yellow shirt) Failure: Sorry Mappy, you are late to the altar. No bonus. + + ----- ----- -------- ---- + ----- ----- --------~~ + | H -----~~-----~~-------- + + -----~~-----~~--------~~ LEVEL 3-1 This level introduces you to the concept of broken ladders below. You and the kitties can fall of these without any consequence, but you can't get back up. Here I recommend going hard right. You'll get the x5 at the bottom and can circle around for the far right one and the two top ones(break the top trampoline if you suspect kitties are coming.) There are still plenty of pullies to use and although there is one nasty ring to get(the one in the dead-end) this level is still not too bad at all. You may also have to fake the kitties out to get in the train. + + ---------------~~----------------------- v ' + v ' v ---------~~---- ----------- ---------- +| H| + ' ---------~~---- ----------- ---------- H * ~~---------------~~-----------~~----------~~ ****IN THE TRAIN**** Pull the kitties over to the left while waiting a bit, then sneak under and go to the right. This shouldn't be too difficult. ------------------------ v v ' | ------ ----- --------- | v ------~~----- --------- * H | ~~-------------~~---------~~ LEVEL 3-2 This scene introduces down-ladders you can jump into; kitties can, too, and meeting them that way is fatal. Using the cheese cannon and going right should get you the x5 pretty easily, and you drop down and circle clockwise from there to pick up the other tree. Break the top right trampoline and you can probably pick up the two remaining trees-- maybe you'll need to circle around again for the one to the left. + + ----- ------------- ----- ----------- C H '' * | ' -----~~------------- -----~~----------- v ^ ' H + -------------- ----------- ----------- ' H + H + ~~--------------~~-----------~~-----------~~ LEVEL 3-3 Again you can sucker all the kitties into jumping down. Then you can go past them on the top platform. However, there is an interesting dilemma here. Running across the top is tough, and you don't want to do it more than once, but you'll have to in order to get the x5. I say, this time, ditch the x5. In fact, you may want to just pick up the nearest tree first and make a brief segue to pick up the one on the third platform as you go across the top. Then when you cycle to the lower right and eventually get the final ring, climb up the stairs on the second level to drop down left into the hut. + * ------------------- ------------------- v ' + v H ------- ----------~~------ ----------- + | H ^ + ' ------- ----- ----------- ----------- ' ' + H ~~-------~~-----~~-----------~~-----------~~ ****INSIDE THE HUT**** You can go directly for the torch here, although if you wait a bit you will be out of luck and may have to go over the top and around. If you do get the torch this way, bounce on the trampoline a bit. Wait until Goro is on the trampoline and then go right. The exit is in fact above the higher trampoline. ------ ---------------- |H v * ------~~-------- ------~~ H | & -------- ------ ------ |H --------~~------~~------~~ LEVEL 3-4 Outside is pretty annoying since you have to go back and forth. Same rules still apply but you'll have to adjust to the different jumps you'll have to make going left--unless you get killed, when you will start on the left. ****INSIDE THE CAVE**** This should be a familiar theme by now; sucker the kitties over to the left, then go around and get the treasure. It should be a simple walk right before you jump on the far right trampoline and climb up the ladder to get out of the cave. Be warned that there are leaping fish-- distractors and deadly--which will distract you if you take the under route. ------------ ------ -- f v | H ----- ----- ---------- | H | H -----~~----- *---------- H | ------------~~----------~~ LEVEL 3-5 The x5 is certainly secluded here, and although you can circle around counterclockwise to get it, that is probably not worthwhile. You can sucker the kitties into falling on the half-up stairs, and you can lead them on a long chase up, right, etc. You will probably want to break the two trampolines with trampolines under them on the way, and you may have to use a distractor to get the x5 before you exit(go along the top, probably.) + + ------~~----------------~~-------------- ' H H *| ------ ------~~-------- ------ ------ + ' | ' ------ ------ -------- ------~~------ H ^ + H + ~~--------------~~--------~~--------------~~ LEVEL 3-6 The top left door is the one you need to hit to get out of this maze. It shouldn't be too hard once you figure out what the doors do. Again, each one teleports you to another, except for the top left. This is a bit more crooked but the back-and-forth movement to teleport frequently works well. Of course 1, 2 and 4 are the best doors to go after, and if you can sucker the monsters to crowd around door 3, you should have a free ride from door 4 to door 6. The key on the ground is th x5 key. Note that the sun has moved adjacent to the haunted house. ****INSIDE THE HAUNTED HOUSE**** D D ------------ ------------ D D ----- -----~~----- -----~~ D ~~-----~~----- -----~~----- D ~~------------~~------------~~ Below is a summary of which doors go where. The diagram below shows the pattern, 1->2->3->4->5. 6 4 1 2 3 5 LEVEL 3-7 This level is a lot less nasty if you go immediately up and let the kitties fall as they run at you. Then you can drop down to the right and go up and collect the x5--it's pretty daring not to pick up the tree in the upper left, but given that you can pick up a couple of trees very easily after the x5 tree it is not out of the question. After getting them you'll want to swing to the right, go top, drop off to the left, and break the trampoline before heading right to get the last ring you've gone past. Now it should be pretty easy to get the upper left ring if you haven't, and now you should be able to make it all the way to the right without much problem. Of course if you think you have the time you can distract the kitties so they're all bouncing on the trampoline when you go right, but wait too long and you'll need to use the stairs to slow them down a bit or even a distractor. + * ------ ------------------- ----------- ^ H| + v ^ | H -------------~~------------------------- H + v + v + ------------- ------------ ----------- '' H ' -------------~~------------~~-----------~~ LEVEL 3-8 Again getting the x5 is less out of the question than it looks. If you pass up the first ring to the right and hop up to the second level, it will be right there. You're shielded at the bottom from the kitties, who now move faster than you, at first so you can afford to move around and back. I do not advise breaking the top trampoline, which leaves you in a fix getting back left, but the one on the third platform should go. Now if you've already gotten the first ring it is not hard to get the two upper left rings, drop down the ladder, and exit falling to the right. If it's still there you may want to fall to the left first. + + | ---------- ------ ------------~~------ | ' + | + | ----------~~------~~------------ ------ | H v * ^ | -------- -------- ------- -----------~~| ' + ' H | ~~--------~~--------~~-------~~-------------| LEVEL 3 BONUS Jump to the top. Run across and then climb down the broken stairway. Then go to the left, down the ladder, left, off trampoline, to the bottom right, off the trampoline to the right of that, jump right to the second platform, then right again to get to Mapico. Success: Merry Christmas. (Mappy in Santa suit, complete with fake mustache) Failure: Mappy, you missed the Christmas party. No bonus. + + -----~~--------------- ---- + ^| -----~~--------~~----- + H + ----- -------- ----- | + | -----~~--------~~-----~~---- LEVEL 4-1 Introducing dead ends; you die if you fall off them, and bad guys are stunned. Woo, nasty. Take the low road first. If you just want to get through the level, then come out on the other side--pick up the baseball on the second platform, then the one on the top(you may have to use a distraction here) then glide across on the third platform. However you can glide on the third platform and get the x5 bonus if you want, although it is safer to pick up the baseball below it first before climbing the stairs(and the upper one if you can.) Either way you still need to get the top right baseball, which is hard with any kitties around, because there is a ledge that will kill you if you fall off it to the left. I recommend getting it as soon as possible. Also if you get stuck on the center platform, falling off to the right will be lethal but will get you a baseball. You need to jump on the train and get a ticket(there's backward logic for ya!) in order to leave this place. Jump into the first passenger car(the front) to get into the train. ****MAIN SCREEN**** + + -----------------~~----- -------------- + v H * ' ---------~~------ ----------- -------- H H ^ |+ H ------- ---------------- ---------- H H ' ~~---------~~-----------------~~----------~~ ****IN THE TRAIN**** Again, you can fool the kitties into walking to the left, and you can use the trampolines to get by them or to recover when they start to catch up to you, although you should break the top one to reach the ticket below. You have to jump to the right to get the item(from the bottom center trampoline.) IF you act quickly you can go right, get the ticket, go back left and over the top. If not I'd recommend you use a distractor. --------~~------- ----- | -------- -------~~----- | | -------- * ------------ H H | ~~--------~~--------------~~ LEVEL 4-2 You can get a lot of points with the cheese cannon first, and you may want to use that first, but you'll want to go right all the way ASAP. If you are not trying for big points you may want to sacrifice a life to get the baseball in the top center. You have to get it from the left. You can also fall to the right to get another baseball. The x5 seems very impractical to get. Therefore the best course is probably to get the top left baseball, the bottom one, loop back around for the two rightmost ones, fall down to get the center one, and circle back up and right for the final one. You need to enter the bar in the lower right in order to leave this place. ****THE MAIN SCREEN**** + + + ----- ------- ----~~--------- ------ C ' * -----~~-------~~---- ----------~~------ H + ^ ' -------------- --------- ----------- ' + ' H ~~--------------~~-----------~~-----------~~ ****IN THE BAR**** The usual suckering techniques work here, and with the high-bouncing trampolines(break the top one if you feel there's not enough space) it should not be tough to fake the kitties out if you move consistently along the top. Anywhere else and you will either run into a wall or fall off. If you sense a kitty will jump at you after you get the scroll, circle back left. There should be no hurry. -------~~-------- ----- | ------- ------ ----- | ------- ------* --- | | ~~-------~~--------~~-----~~ LEVEL 4-3 Watch out for the "pit of no return." It is possible to have a stalled game in there as the kitties bounce repeatedly against the walls trying to go after you. If you can dump all the kitties in there, you'll win the level with ease. If not, it's still doable, although it seems that bouncing back and forth from the left trampoline to the top two levels can misguide them. First, to allay any fears of getting stuck, you exit the hut in a different place from where you came out. ****THE MAIN SCREEN**** + + + -------~~---------------~~-------------- H H ' + ------- --------------- ------------ ' + ^ H ' ------- ----- ----------- ----------- H | ^ | + ' H | ~~--------------~~-----------~~----------- ****INSIDE THE HUT**** ------------------------ H v ---- ----- ----------- & * --------- ----------- H ~~-----------~~-----------~~ LEVEL 4-4 This level is really excruciating if you forgot the torch. However, if you've had enough practice on the first few section 4's, you should have the pattern down by now. ****INSIDE THE CAVE**** Again, you start on a vine at the top. Beware that the kitties will bounce up and get you if you wait too long. Note that, again, to get out of the cave, you need to climb up the ladder at the right. It may seem easy to pick up the torch by breaking the trampoline above it, but that leaves you no way out, and you'll be forced to lose a life. The best bet to get the vine without losing a life is to bounce on the trampoline to the right and break it, go left, and then try to use the stairs to fake out the kitties. Go back all the way left to bounce on a trampoline and then just go right across the top. If you make a big right jump near the top, you'll make it to the top platform. Use a distractor if you have to. If you're in the dark, you're best off sacrificing a guy. Simply bounce on the trampoline and break it. Then walk across the third platform until you get to the second platform. Bounce to the top, go right, and bounce all the way to the ladder. However, if you want to try to get out without losing a guy, the first thing you need to remember to do is to jump down. Then you will need to jump right at the second platform, jump to get the vine, and come back around. Go up/left so that the stairs may help you avoid a kitty. After you get back to the left, go right and use the ladder to shake off a kitty. Take the lower passage from the first trampoline and the higher from the second. Don't forget to climb up the stairs once you've bounced and got hold of them. Actually, it's a kind of challenge to get through this in the dark so if you've mastered other parts of the game this is a unique challenge. --------- --- ----- H -----------~~----~~--- * | ----------- ----~~----- H ^ | ~~-----------------~~-----~~ LEVEL 4-5 ****THE MAIN SCREEN**** This is one of the nicer level 4 scenes. You can again risk getting the x5 at the far right. If you don't wish to, then remember to jump right above the second trampoline for one baseball and do the same at the right of the third. Left of the x5 past the trampoline you should break, you can fall down, and if you're stuck, fall to the left to get a baseball as you die. If you can get the top right ball before the top left, that is good, as you'll be that much closer to the store as a result. Still there are enough handholds that you can get rid of kitties in the vicinity in a pinch. + + --------- ---------- ----------------- ' + * ---------~~---- ----~~-------- ------- H ^ + H ----------- +------ -------- ------- ' ~~-----------~~--------~~--------~~------- ****INSIDE THE STORE**** Inside the store, if you dawdle, you'll want to lure all the kitties to the left, then make a run to the right. Using the trampolines to outwit the kitties should be simple. Otherwise you can just zoom to the right as the pliers is on the bottom level. -------~~------ ------- ------- ------ ----- ------- ------~~------- * ^ ~~---------------~~-------~~ LEVEL 4-6 As in level 1, the side room is again the church. But beware of the jump down; you could get stuck on the ladder. The x5 key is in the far right. The sun is also tucked away there. ----- ------ --------- ^ v --------- -------- H & ----------- ----------- * | ~~-----------~~-----------~~ LEVEL 4-7 Yuck. This level is nasty, with so many platforms to fall off. The only easy part about it is walking all the way right after getting into the diner. The x5 baseball is in the top center although you probably won't be able to get much after you find it. So I say just get the leftmost baseball, then jump over and bounce on the second trampoline. Go right at the top for #2, then use the stairs to bounce back left. Go hard right and then pick off the rightmost baseball above the lower right one. Climb up the stairs and jump left, getting the x5 baseball that doesn't count now. Then go left on the second platform, fall off, and enter the general store. + * ------ ------------- --- ---------- + H '' H + ---- -------------~~---- --------- ' + ------ ---- -------------- ---------- ^ H ' + ~~------~~--------------------~~----------~~ ****INSIDE THE DINER**** Wait a bit and sneak off to the right. Piece of cake. ------ ----------- ------~~----------- ----------~~---- * ~~------------~~-----~~ LEVEL 4-8 This level is actually much easier than you'd expect. Not a lot of platforms you can fall off. The only tough baseball to pick up is the one in the middle, and you should be able to goad the kitties over to one side, then run the other way. Use your distractor per level if you have to, to avoid any potential messes. Directly below that ball, you go into the fourth bonus stage. You'll be wise not to go right immediately as a kitty will greet you before you hit the second trampoline. Perhaps you can use the bowling ball on the second platform as a lead blocker to start out. It is hard to get the x5 baseball in the upper right, but given the jumping range you have on the trampolines, you should be able to clear any baseball you want to. + + * ---------- ---------------- ---------- ' + ' ---------- ------- ------- ---------- ' + ---------- ------- ------- ---------- ' + ~~----------~~-------~~-------~~----------~~ LEVEL 4 BONUS Go all the way right. Then go left at the second platform and get the baseball left of the stairs before climbing them. Go left across the third row and past two trampolines until you get a baseball, then go back right and then bounce to the top, where going right will get you to Junior. Success: I wish you many happy birthdays, Jr. Thanks daddy. Failure: Mappy, you missed Jr.'s birthday celebration. No bonus. + ---- ---------------- ---- + + ----~~-----~~--------- +H ---- ----- --------- h + + -----------~~---------~~ END OF FAQ PROPER ================================ VERSIONS/CREDITS 1.0.0 submitted to GameFAQs 12/20/2001--fixed some maps and added x5 information and some walkthroughs along with general info. The usual proofreading that results when you have a fresh look at a FAQ four months later occurred as well. The FAQ is now complete, although it can probably be polished. 0.5.0 submitted to GameFAQs 8/23/2001--bonus levels and non-technical information included. Maps for level 1 and bonus scenes completed. Thanks to vimm.net for the ROM image and eBay for the cartridge itself. Thanks to http://www.atarihq.com/tsr/manuals/mappylan.txt for the transcription of this manual. I noted the few places where I took stuff directly from the manual(i.e. what the graphics were intended to be,) but it was a useful reference.
